With the above criteria applied, five asteroids remained as candidates for the OSIRIS-REx mission, and Bennu was chosen, in part for its potentially hazardous orbit. At the time of the event, Bennu was 1.342 au from the Sun, and Bennu COM was at a distance of 1.76 km and 91.2° phase angle from OSIRIS‐REx at the time of the event. The asteroid was within 0.05 astronomical units of Earth (about 20 times the distance from Earth to the Moon).
